Going forward, May 18 will now be known as International Maritime Women’s Day as the International Maritime Organization IMO Assembly adopted the resolution.

In today’s industry women are made up of 1.2% of the global seafarer workforce and this resolution is to garner the attention to recruit more women into the maritime industry while also promoting women empowerment and gender equality.

“This day for women in maritime will further increase their efforts to achieve gender equality. The resolution is an excellent follow-up to the 2019 theme on women’s empowerment in maritime and the Parliamentary resolution adopted in 2019. I am pleased that member states are joining the call for a barrier-free environment for women,” said IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim
