Rosatom to expand Russian fleet to at least eight nuclear-powered ice breakers.

Russia’s next generation of ice breakers will include up to eight nuclear-powered vessels capable of smashing through ice 3m thick, reports TradeWinds.

Rosatom controls five of Russia’s nuclear-powered ice breakers, but has plans to order at least three more.

The latest addiction to the Russian fleet is the 60MW Arktika built in 2020. It escorted its first vessels in the Northern Sea route in November.

Rosatom director of the NSR Directorate Vyacheslav Ruksha said: “We expect that Russia’s Arctic fleet will have at least eight nuclear-powered ice breakers by 2030.”
