Litany of pirate attacks continues

Two more ships boarded in the Gulf of Guinea.

Dryad Global has reported two more boardings in the Gulf of Guinea today, making the region a hotspot for piracy and necessitating full hardening measures by vessels transiting the area. The two reports follow hot on the heels of several other incidents in the last few weeks and the threat level is classed as CRITICAL.

The Singapore-flagged Maersk Cadiz (9526459) was approached by an unknown number of attackers and was boarded 118nm SW of Bonny Island on Saturday. The 249m-long container ship was steaming from Tema to Kribi when it was attacked. The Nigerian authorities were alerted and ships were dispatched to aid the vessel. All 21 crew members are reported as being safe and the Cadiz is secured.

A second ship, the Maltese-flagged Port Gdynia (9526459) was boarded in the early hours of this morning 95nm S of Brass. A container ship also, she was steaming from Lome to Bata when she was attacked. Details of the welfare of the crew are unknown at this time.
