A fire broke out aboard the MV President Eisenhower in the early hours of Wednesday morning, reports the USCG. Ship tracking showed the vessel displaying “Not Under Command” and drifting at a speed of 1 knot towards the Californian coast.

The 2005-built, 7,831 teu vessel is 300m long and was en route from Los Angeles to San Francisco. She is operated by CMA CGM Asia Shipping PTE Ltd.

The Coast Guard confirmed that the vessel suffered a fire, but that it was extinguished by the ship’s own fire suppression system. No injuries or pollution were reported.

Updates suggest that the ship has been taken in tow and that there is no risk of grounding.
