A pilot has died while disembarking the Greek vessel, Maria GS, in the Russian port of Novorossiysk. The unnamed man fell into the water on Wednesday evening after moving from the 28,499-dwt vessel to the pilot boat, reports Tradewinds.

Sergey Ostaptsov, deputy head of the state labour inspectorate for Krasnodar territory, said: “He was taken to hospital in serious condition, where he died.” The Navorab daily newspaper reported that a port worker on the scene said the man was recovered from the water unconscious.

The Russian labour inspectorate will now investigate the accident and Ostaptsov said compensation to the man’s family would be in the order of RUB1m ($13,500).

The ship is operated by GS Maritime of Greece and has now sailed to Tobruk in Libya. The vessel had a clean port inspection record and protection and indemnity through the London P&I Club.

The incident comes a day after a Ukrainian mariner was killed by a cargo hatch aboard the 4,100-dwt Solymar at the Danish port of Velje. The vessel was importing metal from Szczecin in Poland.
