Washington has issued a Jones Act waiver for a foreign shipping company in order to ease fuel shortages on the US east coast following the ransomware attack that shut down the major East Coast fuel artery run by Colonial Pipeline.

The White House said Thursday that the exemption applied to one tanker but that other waiver requests are under consideration.

“This waiver will enable the transport of additional gas and jet fuel between the Gulf Coast and East Coast ports to ease supply constraints,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

The 101-year-old Jones Act, stipulates goods transported between U.S. ports must be carried on ships built and registered in the U.S. as well as crewed by American workers.
