Ro-ro sinks in Japan’s inland sea – three missing

A Japanese ro-ro has collided with a South Korean chemical tanker in the Kurushima Strait.

Three crew members are missing after the 11,454-gt, Prince Kaiun-operated ro-ro, Byakko, collided with Heung-A Shipping’s 3,497-dwt Ulsan Pioneer in the Kurushima Strait in Japan’s inland sea.

According to NHK, the accident occurred just before midnight local time Thursday. A search for the missing mariners is ongoing with the Japanese coast guard vessels and local fishing vessels involved.

The nine remaining crew from the Byakko were rescued and evacuated to hospital. The 13 seafarers onboard Ulsan Pioneer are said to be safe and uninjured. No oil spill was reported following the collision.
