Searching for continued ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, one company is interested in cutting carbon dioxide emissions with using ammonia-fueled engines for vessels.

Japan’s Nippon Yusen KK (NYK) has joined with other companies in an effort to produce two vessels with ammonia-fueled engines, a tug-boat to be delivered in 2024 and an ammonia gas carrier anticipated for 2026 delivery.

Safety measures, laws, procedures and the like will be drafted during the entire research and development process as the project is expected to cost approximately 12.3b yen.

The general manager of NYK said, “To lower emissions from ships, liquefied natural gas(LNG) will be the most appropriate fuel to replace fuel oil for the time being,” he continued, “Ammonia-fueled ships won’t be in full swing until 2030s as global supply chains of the fuel are needed.”
